Mr. Kunal Kumar, Pune Municipal Commissioner, stressed on the need for greater support from residents to ensure the city’s cleanliness under the Union government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

According to him, “The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and other government agencies are trying their best to make Pune city clean under the Swachh Bharat scheme. However, we need more support from citizens to make the city clean and beautiful. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is more about behavioural changes in people with regards to cleanliness. If citizens themselves decide to keep the city and their surroundings clean, it will help the civic authorities to keep Pune cleaner. People should remember that Pune has been selected as the number two city in the country under the Smart City contest. Without keeping Pune clean, the city cannot become smart,” he said.

He further stressed on the efforts taken by PMC to keep Pune clean. Mr. Kumar said, “On part of the PMC, we have planned to ensure that all the garbage processing plants are made functional by December-end this year. Currently, the PMC is not able to process 100 percent of the garbage generated daily in the city. Hence, it has already given work orders for commissioning three garbage processing plants. The work for this is underway and the civic body has set December-end as the deadline to get these plants operational.”

Mr. Kumar appreciated the efforts taken by Pune in garbage management. He also lauded the Delivering Change Foundation for creating awareness amongst the citizens regarding the garbage segregation.
