Malaysian Minister Dato’ Sri Idris Jala compliments the Sakal Media Group’s water initiative

MUMBAI: The need to act now, by 'thinking-the-impossible' was the driving force mid-way through the six-week 'Water for All' lab conducted by the Sakal Media Group to find solutions to the water woes in Maharashtra.

Participants at the water lab, which include senior bureaucrats, water experts, NGO workers and corporate executives were of the opinion that the State would have to focus on water as a critical issue, with specific plans based on financial models to find specific solutions.

The water lab is an initiative of the Delivering Change Foundation of the Sakal Media Group, in collaboration with the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) of the Government of Malaysia and has a clear five-year plan to solve water woes.

Addressing the participants, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, Minister in the Malaysian PMO and CEO of PEMANDU said, "Any plan without a budget is simply a draft. Problems arise during implementation and thus budgeting structures need to be crafted to implement changes."

Jala was reviewing the ‘Water For All’ programme along with Abhijit Pawar, Managing Director, Sakal Media Group and several senior IAS officials on Thursday. Taking stock of the progress made across the three water labs of Agriculture, Source and Conservation and Domestic and Industries, Jala said that it was important to set ‘Olympic’ targets to bring about change in the existing system. He called upon political parties, government agencies, corporates and NGOs to pro-actively contribute to Sakal Media Group’s efforts. The Malaysian minister exuded confidence at the initiative launched by Sakal Media Group to provide water for all in Maharashtra. He termed it a ‘world-record’ target in itself and expressed confidence that it would bring about change. During his 30-minute presentation, Jala outlined the importance of contemporary solutions to resolve age-old issues, like drought, which had tormented Maharashtra for decades.

Speaking on the occasion, Abhijit Pawar, MD, Sakal Media Group, highlighted the significance of the lab-process in shaping a sustainable future. He termed the programme a ‘historic event’. “Dedicated efforts and honest intentions will make anything possible. The key is to bring all the elements together and work them out. We are all responsible for our future generations,” Pawar said.

QUOTE-UNQUOTE

This is a fantastic job done by the members of the 'Water For All' lab. It is just two weeks into the lab and work done by them is enormous. Setting and achieving such high targets require dedicated efforts and honest intentions. Sakal Media Group has been very persistent in its efforts and I am sure, such efforts will help 'Deliver Maharashtra'.

- Dato' Sri Idris Jala, Minister in the Malaysian PMO and CEO of PEMANDU

This is a historic event. All of us have come together with honest intentions to 'Deliver Maharashtra'. This is transformation in process. The future generations will remember this and thank us for all the efforts being undertaken in the water lab.

—Abhijit Pawar, Managing Director, Sakal Media Group

The deliberations made at the lab by all the members at various levels and stages will definitely assist the State government in implementing successful water policies, projects and forming precise budgets.

- Devendra Fadnavis, Bharatiya Janata Party, Maharashtra Unit President

I had no doubt from the very start that the 'Water For All' lab will be a different and unique process. I therefore got associated with it. This is a practical transformation method. We are midway and must now advance further.

- V Giriraj, Principal Secretary (Water Conservation and EGS)

Strategic solution planning involving all water-related issues in Maharashtra are being dealt with at the lab very successfully. I am impressed with the work flow and the quality of data by the members that emerged in the lab.

- Dr Sudhirkumar Goel, Additional Chief Secretary (Agriculture)

This is not a common practice that government, private entities, NGOs and experts deliberate on a table about a single problem. The Sakal Media Group's initiative is unique and the entire plan of comprehensive discussions in three labs is sure to bring forth some head turning projects.

- Bill Young, Lead Water Resources Management Specialist and Program Leader (South Asia) World Bank

The concept to involve all bodies responsible for water and its various processes in Maharashtra under one roof is commendable. The lab is sure to conceive very practical solutions and projects to resolve water crisis of the State.
